Birthday Girl

We had a party for her on November 14th - all of her grandparents were there and all of her aunts and uncles. Cara couldn't believe all the people that wanted to play with her. She was so excited that she kept saying "hi."I think one of her favorite parts of the party was all the balloons. I think she tried to say the word "ball" a couple times prior to the 14th, but when she saw her new ball pit and all the balloons she said "ball" about a million times. It sounds more like "bah," but it is pretty clear what she is trying to say since she points at the "bah" in question!

I can't believe how much I love this little girl. Sometimes I feel like she is still a part of me. It truly is the most indescribable, amazing feeling. It fills me up.

It was fun, but I ordered poorly. Thankfully Andrew shared his with me.

As far as I can tell, she thought it was pretty cool. She can't really jump on her feet, but she was in crawl position bouncing and moving around. She just loves other kids, so it was pretty cool.

Random fact of the week: Sneezing. Cara LOVES sneezing. When she sneezes she gets such a kick out of it. We are all now fake sneezing because it is so much fun. She is getting pretty good at fake sneezing too, though there is some spit involved. The day care teachers have fun with it as well!

Ladybug's first steps

Well, Halloween was a pretty cool day this year! After a long Saturday, a put on Cara's ladybug costume and then brought her to the full length mirror to check herself out. We were a couple feet from the mirror and when she saw herself she was so excited that she took her first independent steps towards her image. It was the cutest thing I've seen in my life!! That seems to have triggered a bit more bravery in standing without help and taking a few steps. Fun stuff.

We went over to Grandma McDonnell's in order to see all the trick or treaters. We get some at our house, but they get more. When Cara saw the kids dressed up, she was so, so excited. Each time they were leaving, Cara went after them. I think she would have loved to go around to houses, but then I would have had to eat all the candy :)

Bows

Cara had been in a bad mood for a few weeks toward the end of September/early October. She was pretty fussy in the evenings, but the last couple weeks have been amazing. I think she was going through a lot of development "stuff" because this is when she started wanting to be on her feet 24 hours a day! She has been in such a great mood. She happily plays after school/work - it is so much fun!

Over the past month or so, Cara's sleep patterns have improved somewhat. Some nights she doesn't wake up at all, other nights she will wake up and be inconsolable without a bottle. Progress. She is also down to one nap at day care. The day care teachers say that it is a battle to get her down. We usually cheat and give her a bottle as she goes down, this proves to be quite comforting, but might be a challenging habit to break!

Cara has also grown to be a bit of a cuddler. I was worried that she would never cuddle! Now, sometimes when you pick her up she will put her head on your shoulder - it is so sweet. Her teacher, Shannon, said she is doing this at day care as well. It's fun to get some snuggles from this cute little lady!

My personal favorite is when she sticks out her bum and gives it a good shake as she shimmies with her shoulders. She's a natural!

Today when Michael went downstairs she stated calling for him without any prompting. It was really cute.

She still doesn't say mama too much, though still yelling it from her crib if we don't get her out soon enough!

It's only been a few days and I think she is getting the hang of scooting her feet along so she might be able to push herself soon. She is also able to walk while holding the back handle - but that is a little less fun!

One of my favorite pictures

Cara has been a busy girl this past week, she has been on her feet pretty much 75% of the day. She is really trying to find her balance to walk, but I think she still have some time left. Unfortunately! It has really been a struggle this past week because she is going through this development. I had vacation from Thursday through tomorrow and she has given me a run for my money. I shouldn't blame her - she just wants attention. Books, to be held up by her hands to walk, "wrestling," playing with balls, going to the store, going to the park, etc. When I wanted to take a little break, Cara has not been impressed. She will be going back to day care tomorrow and I have a feeling she will be in better shape because there is more activity and excitement.

On the plus side, she has been so cute with starting to communicate. She loves "uh oh," but she also is really consistently saying mama. Well, she only really says mama when she wants me to get her out of her crib!

On the crib note - I think Cara might be starting to figure out how to sleep through the night. There were a couple nights this week that she made it through. However, there were some bad ones as well. If she didn't cry so loudly, I might think about letting her cry for awhile. I did for awhile tonight because it was a must - never fun!

She has been so cute this week saying "uh oh." I think I would almost classify that as her first word. She has been trying to repeat things more often - she was very close to saying "thank you" - I was surprised at that one!

Standing and Hugs

Now that Cara is consistently pulling herself up - on EVERYTHING, things are a little chaotic. We have to make sure we keep our eyes on Cara every second. Not that we weren't before, but she can now get herself into even more trouble. Today she was in the bathroom, pulled herself up on the cast iron tub and then tried to launch herself over the top head first. Could have been ugly - luckily I was there to catch her.

Another cute story - Cara pulled herself up on me, as she usually does and came close to me as to give me a hug. She came in close and gave my neck what sounded like a kiss. I could see her reflection in the oven window and saw that she was smiling. Given that she is not usually very cuddly, it warmed my heart.

In order to get some cuddles from her, she and I usually play for awhile on my bed each night before she goes to bed. She loves to roll around, get tickles and be hugged while I swing her around. She laughs and has a great time. It is the highlight of each day.

Luckily, Cara slept all the way there and all the way back. I strategically left at her nap time though! I left my Sirius radio on and it ran my battery down - my mom and I had to use the jumper cables! Always interesting.

Cara really enjoyed spending time with the family. She had a lot of people to read and sing to her - she definitely appreciated that! On our way back from the Maine Diner all four of us sang to her as she was getting cranky...."We are the dinosaurs, marching, marching" ... fun!

There is a great store around the corner that sells all organic, it has been fun to walk there and check it all out. Since I do work, I don't necessarily have the time to make and prepare finger foods, so I try to find some easy options. We thought some unthawed frozen fruit might be interesting.....yes, it was interesting....AND MESSY as you can see from the picture. Cara seemed to enjoy it though. She has been eating fresh bananas and raspberries this week as well and those are a little less messy. I also made her some pasta with cheese and squash...she seemed to enjoy the pasta - I think it was the cheese that did it. Cara LOVES cheese!

Though she does love to stand, she hasn't quite mastered getting there herself unless she is pulling up on mom. I think that must give her more confidence because she knows mom will catch her if she falls. It was a slight risk stepping back to take this picture because sometimes she does let go and falls straight back.....but she's getting there.

You may also notice that she looks pretty tired. This was taken at 8AM and she had just woken up. Pretty late for Cara! It was dark and rainy outside - who doesn't want to sleep in on those days?

Long weekend and a rented lens

IMG_9196
Originally uploaded by amanda+dicob
Well, Day Care was closed on Friday/Monday for Labor day, so I took off Thursday - Monday to spend some quality time with my girl. It was a blast, but it will be very difficult to leave her and go to work tomorrow. As I've mentioned in the past, vacations are even more bitter sweet when you have to leave a darling baby at the other end.

I had the opportunity to rent a lens that I have been curious about. This thing is a monster - Canon's 24-70 USM. It is supposed to be great for portraits, weddings, etc. So, instead of spending an obnoxious amount of money on it, I decided to rent it to see how I like it. Well, it has produced some amazing shots, but it is really hit or miss. I have to take a ton of shots and my success rate isn't as high as my old standard 50mm. Probably just takes some getting used to.

So, Miss Cara had NUMEROUS photoshoots this weekend. I don't think she minds too much, but sometimes she wonders why I hide behind this huge black plastic thing. She would also like to get her grubby paws on it, but we try to avoid that!

As you can see we had some fun with newspapers. Cara loves ripping up paper - we just have to watch her close because she also like to eat it.

In addition to pictures, we had dinner with Aunt Sarah and Uncle Tim, had some play time with Grandma and Grandpa McDonnell and went for a photoshoot with the Freve kids. But mostly, Mom and Cara just hung out and laughed as much as possible! Dada was also able to join in on some jokes! I think Cara did say Daddy - it really sounded like it. II may have mentioned before that, she really tries to say Baby - but it comes out like Daydee. It's pretty cute. She loves her baby dolls! But not as much as the Winnie the Pooh stuffed animal that her Uncle Paul (Hooper) got her. I really need to get a good photo with them together. She always chooses Winnie above all other and tries to say "WInnie" - it is a stretch, but you can tell she is trying!

Today was a milestone for Cara - She finally sat up from a lying position all by herself. Now, with daddy traveling for work, I am a bit nervous to leave her in her crib because the mattress isn't quite low enough. So, she may be sleeping in the big bed for a couple nights.

Back to work/day care tomorrow....it was fun while it lasted!

Just to post Cara's stats from her 9 month appointment:
Height: 29 1/4 inches, 95th percentile
Weight: 21 lbs 7 oz., 90th percentile
Head: 18 inches, 90th percentile

Why crawl when you can scoot?

Scooting really makes much more sense. You don't have to go through the trouble of getting on your hands and knees and then getting back up to play with your toys! Day care said Cara was getting around the room today, but it was every time they turned their back so they weren't exactly sure how she was doing it. So, I enticed her with good ol' Uno Attacks. Yup...it's scooting.

The crawl

Well, Cara has been thinking about crawling for awhile, but she finally actually did it tonight. For the past few weeks, he has been getting into the crawling position, thinks about moving forward, but then sits back down on her butt and hopes that someone will get her what she wants. Not a bad theory. Well, this evening, she decided to slide her hands and knees forward a bit. I wasn't sure that she was ever going to do it. I thought she would just scoot on her bottom or just go straight to walking. We will see if it happens again!

Four at Once!

I stand corrected, Miss Cara is getting 4 top teeth all at once. I mentioned the teeth coming into her teacher, Shannon earlier this week and when I came to pick Cara up, Shannon said that she saw that there were 4 coming through! Poor doll is a trooper and really has been taking it quite well. She is feeling a little out of it in the evenings and does moan some throughout the night. I hope it is over for her soon!

We're getting a top tooth

Cara was a tad feverish yesterday and a little off with naps and such. I should have suspected that something was happening! Poor girl. Can't be fun! She is getting so big, she won't be a baby for much longer....

Cara is starting to move around a bit more. She can get to crawling position - I would say she could crawl, but it is only backward and I don't think that counts. She is also standing by herself while holding on to furniture or toys for support. I can't sit next to her without her trying to pull up on me ALL the time!

She will be going for her 9 month appointment next week and I will add some height, weight then!

As I have mentioned before, Miss Crazy Legs loves to kick, kick, kick, so the little pool provides a great opportunity for the kicks to produce splashes!

We also went to the Family Mass at St. Agatha's on Sunday. It is kind of cool because they have a mass where they invite the families to come so that people feel a bit more comfortable if kids are chattering a bit. Cara absolutely loves the singing, she holds up her hands and yells, "Da, Da, Da, Da." She just loves being around people, so it is a great time for her. She was loving to check out all the little kids. Her dad was so proud because the priest stopped and said hello to the "Little Princess" as he was walking out of the church.

We enjoyed not having cable and Internet - surprisingly!

Cara seemed to have a great time. She loved having tons of people around, so she was happy and smiling 99% of the time. When she is home alone with mom in the evenings, it isn't as exciting - probably because mom is tired from working all day. It was fun to see her 24/7 for over a week. I could really see her change a lot. She learned to clap and to flip from a sitting up position to a belly/crawling position. It's really hard to leave her a day care after all the time with her. Really hard. It does get easier, I remember from after the last vacation.

I have tons of pictures, so I will make sure to post some additional pics...

Cara is really into trying to pull herself up this week. She doesn't have it quite down yet, but she really would like to do it! She had a rough week at day care the week before her 8 month birthday - they were really having trouble getting her to go to sleep. It seems like she is back on a schedule again - thankfully. She can't get enough of her toys. And even better, she likes objects from around the house! Remotes, water bottles, brushes, wooden spoons, etc.
