Cara was born at 12:21 AM on November 15th. We were in the hospital starting at 6 AM on November 14th and we began the inducement around 8 AM. We decided to induce because Cara was a week over due. Cara was long awaited. I question whether or not to induce, but in the end we were glad we did because Cara was 10 lbs, 1 ounce and her placenta was beginning to deteriorate. So let's put it this way, any longer would have been pretty interesting for me and potentially dangerous for Cara.
I tried to have Cara without pain medication, but the inducement medication made that impossible. So, I gave in to the pain meds, well I am fairly stubborn so Michael and the midwife, Marge, decided for me. After the epidural, my blood pressure was low and Cara's heart rate dropped a couple times, but they were able to stabilize us and we went on to a very wonderful birth, especially given the fact that Cara was on the larger end of the spectrum. I was overjoyed when I finally laid my eyes on her. I remember repeating "my baby, my baby" - I'm not quite sure why, but that is what came to me at the moment. She looked a lot like myself and my brother Andrew, but that may have been because her little face was swollen and we round faces. Either way, she was beautiful. I fell in love immediately. Michael couldn't take his eyes off Cara while they were tending to me. I could tell he was smitten.
They finally brought us to the post-partum room just before 4am on the 15th. We were very tired and had a very difficult time with breastfeeding. Cara was stubborn from the beginning. She didn't want to breastfeed and she meant business. Since her mother is also stubborn and wanted the best for her, we challenged each other for the first week and I finally gave in to the bottle. We've had a happy baby since.
We didn't want to let Cara go, but they finally took her to bathe her and getting her dressed. We probably should have let her go to the nursery for longer since we were exhausted, but it's tough to let your baby go when you have only laid eyes on her for a couple hours.
During the day light hours of the 15th we had tons of visitors. Everyone was excited to see Cara. Grandmas, Grandpa, Aunts and friends. Cara was very loved and very welcome into our world!
